Banedanmark has launched a large-scale project for the electrification of a large part of the Danish state railway network in the years to come. The electrification programme will create the framework for a more modern railway system with cheaper and more stable operation, while the expansion of the operation of electrical trains will reduce pollution and contribute to a cleaner environment.
The electrification of a large part of the state railway network creates the basic prerequisites for a modern railway network and endures flexible and efficient railway operation for passenger and cargo transportation alike.
The project wille improve the reliability and attractiveness of the railways and lead to clear benefits for passengers, operators as well as the environment.
At present, the railway network in Denmark is electrified only in part. Banedanmark is already under way with the elctrification of the first section, a total of 57 km between Esbjerg and Lunderskov. Køge North-Næstved, Næstved-Ringsted-Rødby and the new Copenhagen-Ringsted high-speed railway are next.
Additional DKK 8.7 billion have been allocated from the Train Fund DK for the electrification of the sections Fredericia-Aalborg, Aalborg-Frederikshavn, Vejle-Struer and Roskilde-Kalundborg.
It forms the basis of an ambitious, long-term plan for the electrification of the Danish railways. The project is put out to tender, and the decision to award the billion DKR contract will be taken towards the end of the spring 2015.
